what’s in a name

July 9, 2009

With nothing more amusing than “Corn Squares” on my shelf, I turned to good ol’ Wikipedia for a list of creatively-named cereal varieties. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Breakfast with Barbie
  • Oops! Choco Donuts
  • Mr. Wonderfull’s Suprize
  • Puffa Puffa Rice
  • Sir Grapefellow
  • Urkel-Os
  • Yummy Mummy

Observations

  • The names just ooze sugar, lots and lots of sugar. I can see it now, in a variety of colors, thickening the milk on the bottom of my bowl.
  • They don’t actually explain what you’re dealing with, which explains the necessity of airbrushed cereal photos on the box. People can get confused about what they’re buying, as with a woman who found the name “Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries” misleading, and sued the manufacturer. (Thanks for the link in the comments yesterday, Rachel!)

I found some great cereal names from the early 1900s:
Elijah’s Manna, Hello-Billo, Korn Kure, Malt-Ho, Tryabita, Tryachewa, Orange Meat. I would TOTALLY buy a cereal called Orange Meat. Imagine the ad campaign for that bad boy…
