x why z
June 22, 2009
Today someone was giving me her email address over the phone. I wanted to clarify that it contained two x’s rather than two s’s, so I asked, “X as in zebra?”
“No,” she said, “X as in xylophone.”
Oh, man. I can’t imagine why I said that, but so it is with many an embarrassing moment.

That’s funny! I once asked a wrong number if I could take a message – right after I told them they had the wrong number!
Oh! I sympathise. Amusing that your caller chose an example that sounds like it starts with a ‘z’! Very witty, or subtly influenced by your mistake…
