avenue smarts

March 12, 2009

Why is Franklin Avenue Franklin AVENUE instead of Franklin STREET? Its parallel roads are streets and its perpendicular roads are avenues. Those who know are withholding information from the googling masses of which I am part. Tim, a fellow who seems to know a lot about Minneapolis street names, responded to my inquiry with this:

I don’t really know, but usually in Minneapolis, streets that run oddly or buck the naming convention were old paths that predated the city. That’s my best guess.

Do you any have a better guess? Or any solid facts? If so, enlighten me! Does your city have any street naming anomolies?
